Cold weather running is back

winter-running

It’s finally starting to get cold where I am, which means that many people up here are getting ready to hibernate for the winter. Most people lose the motivation to get outside and workout once it gets cold here. For many people, even going to the gym during the winter becomes too daunting of a task. I, however, LOVE running outside all year long. It’s totally doable as long as you know how to dress properly. In the attached picture , I included a shot of myself during and immediately after my run. I also took the time to lay out all the clothes I was wearing to give people a sense of what my layering looks when it’s close to freezing (today’s temperature was just above freezing: a balmy 35 degrees). These are my intermediate cold weather clothes: a long sleeve cold weather top with a light windbreaker type jacket on top. And compression shorts under a pair of fleece-lined leggings on the bottom. Some type of head covering is a necessity as we lose the majority of our body heat through our head and gloves so your fingers stay warm. As it gets colder, I will add a warmer jacket and a hat over my balaclava. I will also pull the the bottom of my balaclava up over my mouth and nose to avoid getting horribly chapped lips or a super runny nose. While many people hate going outside when it’s cold, I find running outside to be very peaceful and calming. I really get a great sense of accomplishment for doing something that most people consider insanity. I like being a little bit of a daredevil, so i guess it’s really not too surprising. Here’s to another awesome season running in the cold.
