I am a second generation Mexican-American on my mother’s side. Although both of my grandparents were born in Mexico, there’s a lot I don’t know about Mexican culture so I was very excited when Book of Life and Coco came out. It was so neat to me to learn about Dia de Los Muertos and traditions that continue in Mexico to this day. I’ve definitely seen the sugar skulls associated with the holiday, but didn’t fully understand the significance that family plays in this holiday. It’s not all about death as many people think but more about remembering those loved ones who we’ve lost. I can definitely get behind that. I love that this Coco shirt includes stylized Loteria cards. I remember playing Loteria as a little girl. It’s sort of like bingo but with gorgeous illustrations instead of just letters and numbers. It makes me very happy to be able to honor my Mexican heritage by wearing this super awesome shirt.
