While I enjoy giving people tips about how to enhance or improve their workouts, it is also fun to show off a little bit every once in a while. The exercise in this video is called a man maker, which is a a burpee holding dumbbells (with or without a push-up) followed by a shoulder press. These can be modified by setting down the dumbbells when you drop into the burpee and picking up the dumbbells again for the shoulder press. Doing the full man maker involves an insane amount of balance and control as it is very easy to have the dumbbells roll out from under you. I did a couple reps without the push-up and then a couple with the push-up to show that modification. The push-up makes it even harder to maintain your balance as you have to focus so you don’t move the weights when you execute the push-up. While I understand the importance of doing a lot of squats, lunges, push-ups and other foundational movements, it can be really fun to challenge yourself with more complicated compound movements like man makers that combine two or more foundational movements. I don’t do super complicate moves every workout, so it’s always a special treat and lets me appreciate just how strong I’ve become.
