So I often tell people the best way to stay committed to the gym is to be a stickler about your workout schedule, and I am a big believer in considering your workouts as appointments that cannot be moved except in case of an emergency. And I do a great job of sticking to that until an emergency strikes. This week was a mess for my gym time as I had one kid home sick and then the other and then a sick day for myself. This week was going to be a little bit wonky anyways as I was invited to another XSport gym by a XIT instructor to experience their HIIT workout on their turf. I was excited to try out a different workout, so I moved my normal XIT workout to Tuesday morning. I was excited to mix up my routine a little and then my daughter came down sick, which means no school and no childcare (aka NO GYM). Thankfully my husband was home Wednesday so I could sneak away to the HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout. HIIT workouts are based around short period of high intensity activity followed by periods of recovery. I’ve done several HIIT workouts on a treadmill but hadn’t done too much weight training HIIT workouts. Not only was the overall workout awesome, but I learned some really cool new moves.
This one is called traveling thigh killers and they are much tougher than they appear, which means they live up to their name. To do this exercise, you start in a sumo squat (a squat position with wide legs and your toes pointed out). You then take two steps then two steps back to your starting position. For such a simple movement, you really feel the burn in your thighs quickly. In all my workouts over the year, I have never encountered another thigh accident that affected me so fast.
This is a variation on toe taps involving a dumb bell. I’ve done toe taps moving around a step, so I figured this would be no sweat. This modification, however, was much harder than I expected. The dumbbell is not as stable as the step is, so you have to be much more careful about how hard you tap and that you’re only tapping on the very top of the dumbbell. It’s also a much tighter space so you’ve got to take very small steps. Once again, it was fun to try something that was new to me.
I’m hoping to be back to my normal gym routine next week, but it was good to see that I could still get in some workouts even when I couldn’t stick to my routine. Since I missed XIT this week, I’m going to be filming my missing videos at home. Just cause my week got messed up doesn’t mean I can just forget about my workouts.
